Our Totem Ridge vineyards in Knights Valely are planted on north facing hillsides in rich, rocky volcanic soils at elevations from 300 to 800 feet. We have 17 acres of vines planted to the following varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Totem Ridge derives its name from the many totem poles that were found on the property near the original farmhouse and barn. Carved in the early 1900’s, they add both a touch of whimsy and history to this special site. Just beyond the borders of the Knights Valley appellation, and a stone’s throw from the renowned Petrified Forest, sits our Ranch Road Vineyard, in the Northern Sonoma appellation. This vineyard, once a walnut grove, is planted to 7 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and sits at an elevation of 1200 feet.
The Ranch Road vineyard possesses an interesting tufa soil, a kind of limestone that is the result of volcanic ash deposits. A combination of this soil, the elevation, and the siting of this particular vineyard create the conditions that result in small berries with intense flavors. It is from this vineyard’s proximity to the Petrified Forest that our winery derives its name.
